Attitude of Gratitude

It's been too long since I've done this.  I was on a roll there for awhile, though.  I'll try to do better.  Here a few things I'm grateful for right now.

1.  My sweet husband who took great care of me and the kids when I was really sick Tuesday night.  He made dinner, cleaned up and got them to bed.  I was overcome with fever, but hopefully I said Thank You!
2.  The flowers that Jared sent me on Wednesday to say 'Hope you feel better.'  (see picture)
3.  Great swimming teacher, Ashley.  She somehow got our timid, Chandler to swim without assistance across the pool, float on his back and jump off the diving board without his life jacket.  He made amazing progress!  Far exceeded my expectations!
4.  Progress toward Preston being potty trained!  He's not there yet, but he's getting closer.
5.  Health!  After being sick, I really appreciate how good I feel right now!

Strengthen your family!

Awhile ago, our High Councilman gave an excellent talk that included 15 things we can do together to increase the strength of our family.  Jared was out with Preston, and I was kicking myself that I wasn't taking notes so that I could share it with him and others.  Fortunately, our Bishop decided to put the list in our ward newsletter this month, so now I have the opportunity to share it with all of you.  (Talk was given by Bryan Pope, Sharon Stake High Council).

1.  Turn off distractions.
Not just bad things, but anything that distracts from family unity.
2.  Set meaningful, adequately high, yet attainable expectations.
Discuss and set expectations as a family.  Be clear and make sure everyone understands them thoroughly.
3.  Pray together as a family and individually every day.
There's great strength in having family members pray for each other.
4.  Read scriptures together as a family and individually every day.
The promise of increased love and understanding is true!
5.  Attend church meetings as a family every Sunday.
Then discuss what each person learned over Sunday dinner or in family council.
6.  Hold regular Family Home Evenings every Monday night.
Actively promote harmony, understanding and involvement in the home.
7.  Spend quality and quantity time together.
No one on his deathbed ever uttered the words, "I wish I had spent more time at the office."
8.  Mom, be at home at all costs.
Carefully consider what this means in your situation and to your family.
9.  Dad, be at home at all costs.
It is easy to let outside distractions keep us away.  Work hard, and then be with your family.
10.  Hold regular, conversational interviews with the children.
Interviews, not interrogations.  Make open communications part of a healthy family culture.
11.  Give Father's blessings.
At the beginning of school, during difficult times, before missions, before marriage, etc.
12.  Settle all disputes, issues, and differences before the close of the day.
Seek understanding and forgiveness; Live each day as if it were your entire lifetime; Focus on what is important today.
13.  Actively inject spiritual influences into the home.
Listen to good, uplifting music; Provide mutual support of each other's undertakings and interests; Create opportunities to share spiritual experiences and feelings.
14.  Eat together.
Prepare meals as a family and use this opportunity to teach valuable skills to children; Sit down and enjoy the meal with good conversation; Clean up together.  Don't leave it to Mom or one individual; many studies support the power and positive influence of family dinnertime.
15.  Create family traditions centered around gospel living.
Provide opportunities for service both within the family and to others.

Good stuff, right?  Feel free to add some of your own in the comments.

Attitude of Gratitude

5 things I'm thankful for right now.

1.  Family, friends and neighbors who are so helpful, kind and willing to help out when we need it.
2.  Warm sunny days even though they are few and far between this time of year.
3.  We've finally started finishing our basement!
4.  Preston still calling out "Mom, hold me!" occasionally.
5.  Fun Girls Night Out with old friends.  It can be several months since we've seen each other, but when we're back together, it's like we've never missed a beat.

Attitude of Gratitude

This is the next installment of things I am grateful for.
1. I am grateful for General Conference this weekend. Along with that goes, I am very grateful that I live in a place that I can watch the Conference on TV. When we lived in Toronto, we had to go to the stake center for each session. On the other hand, it is easier to concentrate in a darkened chapel than home on the couch.
2. I am thankful that we are relatively healthy right now. It can never be 100% can it?
3. I am grateful that boys enjoy playing with each other. They do fight over things a lot, but when one of them is gone, the other misses him greatly.
4. I am thankful for Chandler's enjoyment of soccer this year. Admittedly, he is not the "star" of the team (he is still one of the youngest), but he thoroughly enjoys it.
5. I am grateful for the wonderful storytime program that the Provo Library offers. We live in Orem, but go to Provo's library every week. They sing songs, read books, and have a puppet show each week. The older kids have their own room with similar activities. My boys love it!

Attitude of Gratitude

I've decided to regularly post about things I'm grateful for in an effort to pay better attention to the great blessings I have in my life. I'm going to try to do this often, so if it's been awhile, REMIND ME! Here are the first five...
1. I am very grateful to have a husband who works very hard each day so that I can stay at home with our kids. I know some people choose not to do this, and I truly respect them for their choice. I am always in awe of the amazing balancing act they do. I'm just glad that we have the opportunity to choose what we have chosen.
2. I am grateful that we live so close to both of our families. It truly is a blessing for Chandler and Preston to have grandparents, aunts/uncles, and cousins so close. It's also very convenient when you need a babysitter in a pinch. :)
3. I'm thankful for our amazing ward. I know a lot of people probably feel this way about their own wards, but it feels so amazing to worship with SO MANY amazing people each week. How did they all end up right here?
4. I am grateful to be serving in the Young Women's organization. I've had a lot of callings before and they have been fine. I've learned a lot and they have all been good experiences. But for some reason, I just LOVE Young Womens. Maybe I'm just 15 at heart and feel like I finally fit in. :)
5. I am thankful for Spring finally starting to make its presence known. My bulbs are just starting to poke through the ground and a couple even have flowers on them!

That's it for now. There are many more, but I'll save those for next time.
